[ Majima was sure there had to be some 24/7 karaoke booths around the town. They were everywhere, frankly speaking, at least back in Kamurocho. But what Zhao was talking about was a bar with karaoke. Different atmosphere, different vibe. And these indeed were much rarer breed at the current hour of the night.
Rarer breed in general too.
And honestly, much more fun, even if it meant having an audience. (Hell, to some the, sometimes random, the audience was the main draw.) ]
'm pretty sure the bartender lives there— if he ever even sleeps.
[ And he's not exactly the audience Majima was used to. But not like it was going to stop him. It was Zhao's favourite haunt— correction, Zhao's little gang of misfits' favourite haunt. ]
I say we knock hard enough, he is gonna cave in and open the door. Might get grumpy, but no one can stay grumpy long for ya.
You think too highly of me, Majima-kun. But I'll do my best to placate the poor man if he goes grumpy on us.
[He pushed off the bar then, preparing to move out of this place and onto the next. As he did so he wondered how much he had told Majima about the place. He couldn't remember how much detail he'd given. He knew he talked about it a lot--couldn't help it, really, he spent a lot of time there, hanging out with his friends.]
Never really thought about where the bartender lives but there is a spare room up there our group still uses on occasion. Kasuga mostly.
[In other words, it was entirely possible they'd have more than just the bartender as an audience. Zhao hadn't considered it before he made the suggestion and now...nope, he was still too high on their fun to think about it as anything other than a possibility. He didn't care about hiding tonight. They were having fun and this was their next destination to continue it.]
Maybe we'll end up there in the morning. [He said with a little giggle at the end of the sentence.]
So that's an entire hideout! Bein' in good graces of the barman is the smartest thing to be doin' — never enough safe spots.
[ Kind of reminded him of Serena, or rather, New Serena. Even if it was really Kiryu's camping spot, still both him and Saejima ended being welcome there. ]
And— [ He raised his finger to the sky as he punctuated his final truth ] —free booze.
[ Not to mention a safe coach to rest on afterward. He couldn't wink, for obvious reasons, but that would do. Maybe it was all the shots they had. All the crazy fun. But he was incredibly touched, and giddy to have been led to such a personal place. As if the darkness that started this night was never there to be seen.
As they went their way, he still hummed an ancient 80s tune, all cheerful, all sugar, as he jumped and twirled in front of Zhao, from his one side, to the other. From the left hand, to the right.
He might have forgotten himself with the whole appearing human too. Oni were most easily associated with bloodthirsty, rightfully so— but it was easily forgotten how over the top-festive they could get too. That was the aura raiding at that moment. ]
Yeah, the barman doesn't take any shit from anyone. It's probably the safest bar in Ijincho.
[Zhao raised an eyebrow at that last part Majima said though.]
Free? You think he runs a bar handing out freebies?
[Seriously, dude. The booze wasn't free, and not all of it was cheap. Oftentimes he'd walk in on Adachi or Nanba drinking the cheap shit because they were broke that week. Adachi may have had a tab courtesy of knowing the barkeep the longest but that didn't mean he got the expensive shit because he didn't have to pay it back eventually, or that the rest of them didn't pay like proper patrons of the bar.
Zhao shook his head in amusement as they walked, a little smirk playing over his features as he watched Majima prance about. His eyes kept darting around cautiously while Majima wasn't looking. As giddy as he was from the booze and the fun, he couldn't help the age old habit.
On the other hand, normally he would have hissed for Majima to cut it out with the demonic aura. Tonight he was in high enough spirits to forget his paranoia and simply giggle at the cute antics like nothing was wrong.]
[ Luckily, they strayed from the parts of the city that actually had nightlife, not many people around. But in Ijincho, someone is always watching. And you were lucky if these were prying eyes of the friendly sort.
Majima just laughed at the reaction he caused ]
Hang out long enough, and ya might get a drink or two on the house. Mark my words.
[ He declared it with full conviction as if he had not a shade of doubt there. ]
Either as a reward or— if yer at a time when ya really need it. [ Majima expression turned more thoughtful and he scratched his head to stave off the awkwardness ] Aah, the latter usually means yer not havin' a good time, so it's better to earn a reward.
[ Stay late enough to help close the shop. Kick outside trash and make sure they never come back. Coo at all cat photos of the barmama, or just indulge the bartender in letting him talk for once. Plenty of scenarios, and highly specific. But they all happened ]
[Okay, now Zhao really was curious about the things Majima was saying. It sounded like-]
Heyyy, you sound like you've hung out at the bar a few times before. [a beat] But I know you avoid that place like the plague.
[With fair reason. Both had this silent mutual agreement that Majima...was to steer clear of anyone that would recognize him. Zhao had never asked Majima to do it for him, and he didn't know if Majima himself just didn't want the trouble, but it had worked out that way. No one knew about their arrangement or that Majima often spent the night with Zhao.
At least, Zhao thought nobody knew about them.]
What do you know about Kashiwagi-san? Never heard him talk about anything from before he came to Yokohama now that I think about it.
Geh..! My and my loud mouth... [ Majima didn't stop, but his frolicking slowed down, and the hand on the nape of his neck? Still there. Well, at least until he gets his marbles together enough to take that off.
Zhao always was so sharp, a good thing, truly. A testament to how Majima allowed himself to relax in his presence— that he managed accidentally clue him on that part of his past. ]
I was talkin' 'bout bartenders and barmamas in general, ya know? They tend to befriend their cool regular, human nature. [ The casual tone in his voice almost seemed as if he was going to backtrack from the clue but then— ] —that's what I should say. But yer nose is good. I've been acquainted with Kashiwagi before. Did not expect him here, or ever. It was like seein' a ghost—
[ There's a lot of stories, and simultaneously not all that much. Different families, different factions. An oni trying to pass as a human for as long as he can, and a hunter disillusioned and tired of his ways ]
[Zhao said at the end. His mind's eye recalled the distinctive scar and the sharp demeanor the bartender always held about him. There was an air there that spoke of a hard past, or at least an interesting one.
Being mixed up in yakuza or oni or both was pretty damn interesting. Zhao's curiosity was piqued.]
He get into trouble? Or did he perform a disappearing act like some in the business do when they want to get out?
That's a popular trick, innit? [ Majima snorted, albeit with slightly less humour than usual. Right, the gang was there when certain other dragon decided to make an intense reappearance and briefly steal the show. Not like Majima is the one to talk
Anyways— there was a very important decision to make. To keep the trap shut or to spill the beans. He weighted it for maybe two seconds before— ] Doubt he planned it from the start, just took advantage of some mighty good circumstances. No one's gonna doubt yer a corpse when a bunch of secret-agent-look-alikes shells ya in yer office out of a helicopter.
[ He made a deliberate pause here. A poignant look too. Very well aware of how freaking outlandish it sounded— and OH BOY he was not going to lose a millisecond of the reaction ]
[Zhao countered readily. It was either that or die while still at it. His father was a rare breed who went out while he was sleeping. Of course, he had only half heartedly retired and by "retired" it really meant "let his son take over while he watched from the shadows to correct everything he did." Zhao didn't really want to think about it.
Maybe one day he would tell Majima about his father's disappearing act. How he'd waited till the exact moment to fade when Zhao entered the room... ah, yeah, not thinking about it.]
...You call that 'good circumstances'?
[The Chinese man replied after a bit of that deliberate pause stilled the air. Zhao's eyebrows had knit together as he heard the over-the-top story and then one had raised questioningly as he said his quip in response. He couldn't help it. While surprised and amazed by the story, he had to say what was first on his mind. That didn't sound like good circumstances. That sounded like someone was trying to kill Kashiwagi for real and only barely managed to fail.
Taking advantage of that failure did sound convenient though. Good on him for it.]
They're super convincin' no? If someone just puts a bullet in ya someone might want to check if it was a job well done. Somethin' big profile like that tho? No ones gonna think ya survived that.
[ It's curious how Kashiwagi did at all. Was he just incredibly lucky? Or maybe had one of those rare, mysterious charms that let him survive despite the injuries. Either way, it was the part of story unknown to him— ]
In the end, the guys that took him out didn't make it through.
It was a huge ass conspiracy, a real headache. Tryin' to keep head above the water was like herdin' cats. Trust no one, and all that shit. [ They'd need more time and more drinks to get through this mess ]
In the end, it wasn't even personal. They were after him because of his influence, and knowledge. He was someone that could stop a nasty deal. Hope he knows it all was stopped.
[ Everything didn't end with rainbow and lived happily ever after. No. Lives were disturbed, some were lost. Part of the deal ]
[Zhao's face scrunched up at the information. It all sounded like a pain. What was it with these yakuza types always coming into mess with the status quo and reveal huge, annoying conspiracies? His own included!
He sighed to let it all go with a simple shake of the head. No use crying over spilt milk. Especially if it all turned out fine in the end. He made a gesture as if offering his hand, palm up, and then moved almost like a shrug.]
If he doesn't, you can always tell him. Sounds like something a person would like to know after all the bullshit settled. Though if it was really a big deal, he probably figured it out by now. He's a fairly knowledgeable guy.
[ Must be a curse of Kamurocho right there - conspiracy busting. If Ichiban was asked it would probably have stats and grading and all the stuff ]
He always was. [ Majima was inclined to agree. But it was all more than likely they both were going to pretend to not know each other at all. Easier this way. Would be even easier if Zhao hadn't figured it out, but he was also more than understanding— ]
It's good to know he found his place here. [ Hah. Ha. Ha. ] Hope his karaoke base is well stocked
[He was also a troll and fully prepared to use this information against one or both of them should the desire rise. After all, how could he pass up this opportunity to tease not only Majima but the most cool bartender to ever exist in Ijincho? Yeah, that would be a shame. He couldn't allow that.]
From what I remember, it has some classics even an old man like you might know. [He said with his best teasing voice.]
All right, I walked right into that one. But now I'm just gonna have to spam some newer classics at you until you realize how wrong you are about modern music not being real good. I'll either find something you like, or keep at it till you like it anyway!
Look at ya, all fired up! Challenge accepted! [ Majima graciously stated and tugged on Zhao's arm. Oh he could easily play the old man here. He did assume he was the elder one here anyway, at least until Zhao dropped the bomb about his real age. Can never trust a dragon, one could say— only you absolutely can, he was just an idiot that run on assumption and never actually asked.
Among the creatures lurking in the shadows, oni were rarely the oldest. Part of their nature too— they all died relatively young, but with a burst of loud, ringing laughter on their lips. ]
[Zhao grinned and tugged his arm back, not to dislodge Majima but rather the opposite, to bring him in closer. Zhao brought his lips in close and then whispered into Majima's ear.]
Mark my words. You're gonna lose. And I'm gonna enjoy every second of what I win.
[ How can a whisper be electrifying? Well, this one is. Both because of the challenge it poses, but also the melody and lilt of the voice. And, naturally, who it belongs to.
An all too familiar feeling of shivers going down his spine happened— oh.
Oh—
It's like that. ]
I'm gonna love every second I prove ya wrong. [ Majima purred in return, satisfied all too soon perhaps. ]
[He said with a laugh, pulling back a bit. He didn't let go though. He kept Majima close to his side as they walked, arm in arm. This was one hell of a night to remember.
Somehow, it had turned out satisfactory in the end. There wasn't much more that he could ask for than this. A bit of good fun after such a failure. Zhao hoped Majima felt the same way.
They walked on and eventually made it to the bar. No time to be shy- Zhao marched right on in with Majima's hand in tow, turning around backwards as he went through the door to smile appreciatively at the oni. When they were both through the door he turned back around to order a drink. It was late but the bartender was ready despite the time. And he was smooth...he didn't even bat an eye at the sight of Majima. Zhao was impressed.]
[ Nights like these, like the one it started as, never truly ended like that. They petered out into an exhausting morning, and became a shadow and merely an annoyance, source of a sour mood, by the time afternoon hit. Someone else might also have gotten hit. Just life.
This one time though? This one time it was turned into something else, and all thanks to this little treasure('d gremlin) here. The change itself was on its own intoxicating— and then there were drinks they consumed and were going to get more of.
He returned the smile, all wide, but the teeth didn't seem sharp— though it changed briefly, when Majima turned to the bartender. Just like Zhao said.
In just few, large steps, Majima crossed over to the music wall— and the karaoke machine just next to it. He tapped his pockets in search for a wallet— to feed the machine all the yen it demands. ]
Yamazaki for me, pretty please! [ Majima stated as he noticed in the peripheral vision that Zhao approached the bar itself. It's probably best if he leaves the interactions with Kashiwagi to him. For now. Who knows what happens if they get more drunk ]
[Zhao chuckled fondly at Majima as he watched the oni bounce over to the karaoke machine and start it. He ordered the drink as requested (although not really necessary as loudly as it was stated) and one for himself, told the tender to put it on a tab so he could pay it later. Out of all the group he was probably the only one that could afford to rack up a tab before paying it off and the bartender didn't seem to mind. Or maybe he was just being polite to Kasuga's friends. Not like Zhao talked to him as much as Kasuga and Adachi seemed to.
That might change in the near future. Maybe he could get some stories out of him, find something to lord over Majima's head for some ridiculous fun. Nothing serious, just a little teasing to play a game with.
He waved a hand at Majima.] So, what're you gonna sing me tonight, canary? Your choice. Make it good.
Ya won a lullaby, but it would be a waste to just sing one song, no? So I'm gonna leave that for later, when yer thoroughly decimated and seduced by the power of my voice!
[ Majima sounded positively cheerful, even if his clicking intensified. Scrolling, scrolling— sheesh, that's quite a library. Both new stuff, and some oldies, but sadly no good system to sort and search.
Finally—
Finally! ]
A-ha!
[ That's it, that was the sound of someone hitting the jackpot. Majima grabbed the mic, turned around, and loosened up his jacket. As he had it in him to often move a lot during the singing— well, he hoped that this one was going to be a surprise. For how ancient and... frankly, perky and chipper it was. Very far from what one could consider his style.
But the truth is, Mad Dog, had soft spot for pop idol music. ]
[The gremlin hit a brick wall and blue screened--or rather, his face opened up into an expression of surprise as the pop music began to play and Majima's voice rang out. It wasn't bad, not at all. It was quite good in fact. It was a beautiful singing voice, and Majima had been right, it didn't just impress, it seduced with its power.
The expression warped, eyebrows rose into hairline, until a smile slowly broke out, and then he burst into a fit of giggles. He clapped and cheered Majima on as the song progressed and he watched Majima get really into it. His expression settled into enthusiasm and happy smiling.
This was unexpected in the best of ways. He didn't want to stop it. It was too good to be true. Majima's voice had gone from screechy predator to smooth idol singer. It was gorgeous. This oni...yeah, he was going to stick with gorgeous. Full of surprises and handsome as he was intelligent.
If Zhao got to only hear this one song, he was glad it was this one. It was kind of cute to watch the oni get into singing it.]
